A Tale of a Glaucoma Society – How it was born?

July 18, 2007, 11 am with some opthalmologist of Bangladesh I was observing the Global Assembly of 2nd World Glaucoma Congress (WGC) at SUNTEC Hall, Singapore. Sitting at the back in a very big auditorium asked the organizers – Can’t we sit in the front row?  Ans: Sorry those are reserved for the representatives of the members of Different glaucoma society who are the members of World Glaucoma Society. Became deeply shocked.  Question came to my mind How can I take my country to such a prestigious place?

During 5 days stay in the conference I talked to many International Glaucoma Leaders , like International Association of Glaucoma Societies President Prof. Ivan Goldberg ( Sydney ) , Prof. Robert Ritch (New York) . Dr. L. Vijaya ( India) ,JoefryLeibman (New York), and others _ How can we form a glaucoma society in Bangladesh & How can we be affiliated with World Glaucoma Association?

Came back home . At that period I was the Joint Secretary General of Opthalmological Society of Bangladesh. Took  the advantage. In a meeting of OSB  proposed to form a Subspeciality Society in Bangladesh  named “Glaucoma Society “ .

Honorabele Adviser to the Prime Minister, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh for Health And Social Welfare Prof. Sayed Modassar Ali was the President of OSB at that time & presiding the meeting. He asked me to organize a Glaucoma Society in Bangladesh along with Prof. M Mustafizur Rahman, Prof. Sk M.A. Mannaf& others.

On October 03, 2007 Prof. M. Mustafizur Rahman convened a meeting at a local restaurant at Dhanmondi, Dhaka to form the Glaucoma Society in Bangladesh.
